Can't boot from Vista 5308 DVD

I have the following system:
DFI LanParty UT nF4 SLI-DR Expert Bios 12/07/2005 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 2x1024MB Corsair XMS DDR500 (TWINX2048-4000PT) 2x Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6L250S0 7200RPM SATA 150 HDD LITE-ON SHM-165H65 DVD w/ LiteScribe & DVD-RAM Support eVGA 256-P2-N527-AX GeForce 7800GTX Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 500 MCE Audigy 2 ZS
When I attempt to boot from the Vista Feb CTP 64-bit edition DVD:
- I get the message that Windows is loading files - The animated progress bar appears for a few seconds - The screen goes black - The hard disk light flickers a bit, then stays on - Then nothing else happens (it's hung)
I've re-burned the DVD and verified that it was written successfully -- with the same result. Is there some component of my system which would cause the lockup? Is it appropriate to run the 64-bit edition on this hardware? Is there somewhere Microsoft would like me to go to run diagnostics or make a more formal report?
I am still downloading the 32-bit version (for the next 33 hours apparently), so I haven't been able to try that version.

Well, I could have mounted the disc image virtually with the Microsoft Virtual CD tool or Nero's ImageDrive (which I already have) ... but Windows XP 32-bit won't let you run a 64-bit installer.
Seems that booting from the actual DVD is a more clean/pure approach anyway... Surprised it doesn't work.

Try using Daemon Tools to emulate the ISO as an actual DVD. www.daemon-tools.cc - much easier than burning to a DVD and usually more efficient :o)

Installation of 5308 is weird, I saw some of your symptoms during installation, I just left it until it actually installed. There are a few black screens and hangs during the install phase. Give it an hour and see how it goes. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta FAQ for MS AntiSpy http://www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/FAQ_MSantispy.htm "Bill Marriott" wrote in message

I experienced a few "blackouts", however it was as if it was changing the screen resolution sorta thing, it regained to how it was within a few seconds. However I had to copy the contents of the DVD across to the hard drive in a seperate folder because it said that "Setup cannot access the C: drive, please ensure you have enough space".
Yeh right, it's a 250GB hard drive and I've only just put XP back onto it... righto 8-)

Not an issue I had. I burned the image to DVD (using Nero 7) and did a clean install (to a separate PATA drive) from within MCE 2005 (running on an SATA drive). The installation was *completely flawless*.
Not *partially flawless*, but *completely flawless*.
I will likely later blank the drive and do another clean install (this time, booting from the DVD itself) just for grins.
The only issues I've had so far with 5308 are driver-related.

Andre,
I swapped the PCI slot positions of my Audigy 2 ZS card and Hauppauge PVR-500 card, then reset the ESCD and this permitted the DVD to boot without hanging.
I do see what you mean about the sluggishness and black screens during install, but this was not my issue. My problem was a true lockup just after the animated progress bar. I never got to the greenish aurora-esque screen.
